Cyber Security: Windows 10 22H2 Update
Hi there, I hope you're safe. If you own a Windows 10 computer then you probably already know about the latest update to the operating system that was initially made available to users in October 2022. The update was released to improve the security and performance shortfalls of Windows 10 computers worldwide. This particular update was named Windows 10 Version 22H2, I recently learned that the naming convention for the titles of these updates specifies the year of release and the period within the year. 22H2 means the second half of the year 2022. This update serves as the predecessor to the 21H2 update that was released in the second half of 2021, Version 21H2 can be automatically updated to Version 22H2. Here is a table that shows all the versions to date.
Before I get into my experience and what led me to download this update, I'd like us to explore some definitions first because that's what nerds do 😉.
Cyber Security: The addition of reinforced layers to a computer system that serve to protect data, this includes password authentication, multi-factor authentication, and antivirus programs.
Operating System: The system software that serves as the bridge between the user and the applications. Popular choices include Android, iOS, and Windows.
Performance: The efficiency with which a computer application can execute and is measured in time. Software that responds quickly is said to have better performance.
VPN: An abbreviation for Virtual Private Network. VPNs allow a user to access the internet from their physical location as if they were in a different location. VPNs encrypt your internet traffic by disguising your online identity and establishing a protected network connection.
Malware: Malicious software that invades a personal computer to cause harm i.e. accessing personal information, corrupting data, or affecting performance. Malware, also known as a virus can be downloaded onto a computer via the internet or through a physical medium such as a USB.
Software Update: Improvements to a computer application to enhance security, performance, and user experience. These updates are usually sent over the internet or released with the newest device of the range.
The Windows 10 Version 22H2 update improved the overall performance of my Windows 10 computer after I experienced some freezing and lagging of the system. What happened was I wanted to access a website that isn't available in my region through a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Then, my Windows 10 laptop started to perform very slowly; almost dysfunctional. I think the malware must have been sent from the location that I was virtually browsing from with the VPN and my computer had never experienced such a strong force.
I received the notification to update my virus & threat protection after ignoring the prompt to update my Windows OS for a week. This frightened me into getting both updates. My computer has since returned to its normal functionality and the performance is satisfactory.
I would have loved to update to the new Windows 11, however, my Intel processor doesn't currently meet the minimum system requirements. If you haven't already, I encourage you to update your version of Windows. This keeps your system secure against the newest malware and running at its best. To update Windows, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Or you could simply search for Windows Update from the taskbar.
As a lifelong user of the Windows OS, I like to keep up to date with all things within the ecosystem. Here is another article I wrote about Unique Windows 10 Features.
